Title: Fiddler on the Roof Edition: 40th anniversary Genre: Musical Starring: Topol, Leonard Frey Director: Norman Jewison Studio: MGM Runtime: 181 minutes Release Date: April 17, 2011 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 2 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: A Bottom Line: For any fan of the film this is a great buy with plenty of extras and a competent HD transfer For the 40th anniversary of this classic musical, Fox released it on Blu-Ray with a slew of extra features. Included you get commentary, documentaries, making of's, and audio tracks of each song. There is also a dvd copy, but with none of the special features. Its a pretty well rounded group of extras. Not to mention the HD transfer is nicely done as well. The colors are cleanly boosted and nearly every shot looks fresh. Its only in the darker sequences you get graininess, but overall its a competent transfer. Now as for the movie itself, I hardly care for musicals. Especially ones that are three hours long. But if musicals are your thing, then I'm sure the numerous catchy songs and literal stage adaptation makes this a must own. In order for me to get into a musical it has to be quickly paced, every song must service the story, and most importantly work as a movie even without the music. the only thing separating Fiddler on the Roof the movie from the play is cameras and elaborate sets. For some that makes them love it, but for me it just doesn't work. |
