Bottom Line:

Jolene is a movie thats occasionally endearing, but on a whole is hollow and unoriginal

 Apparently gingers do have souls...

Jolene is a story that follows the titular character for ten years as she discovers her identity, sexuality, and searches for happiness in life.

If that sounds pretty cliche, well you're right. Jolene is a formulaic biography, going through the usual beats as other films in this genre do.

Here, Jolene is a girl who grew up in foster care and we follow her as she goes from one sour relationship to the next, maturing as she goes along.

Now although these type of films can be quite enjoyable, Jolene on the most part isn't. They skip on giving the characters any background or real intuition to who they are. Which makes it hard to understand or care why Jolene continues to get into bad relationships. Each time she finds a new man, it feels like an episode to a sitcom because they never offer anything new and always end the same. What's even worse is that all the men she falls for don't give good performances. Some of them may be good actors, but here they are all caricatures of stereotypes.

Thankfully though, the central actress Jessica Chastain does have good moments and keeps the film grounded as best she can. Without her, the movie would be a total lost.

As stands, Jolene is a movie that's occasionally endearing, but on the whole is hollow and unoriginal.

As far as the Blu- ray is concerned, seeing Jolene go across America in HD does look good as there are some nice shots of landscapes. There are enough special features here to entertain with there being interviews, a commentary, and a blooper reel. If you end up liking the movie, then the Blu-ray wouldn't be a bad purchase.
