THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER:
It’s the last day of Summer, school is about to begin again for a new year, and that means one last night of fun for all the teenagers. As the day begins in a suburb of Detroit, the teens take to the streets to find some fun and possibly make a connection with another. Possibilities are endless for the kids and they are going to make the best of their last day as they meet up with other friends as they walk around talking, having fun, going to parties, and making some love connections.

MEMORIES OR IF YOU’RE STILL A TEEN THEN IT’S WHAT YOU’RE DOING:
The Myth of the American Sleepover takes a group of teens on their last day of summer before school starts again and follows along with what they do. With the title of sleepover and the photo of the large group of kids in the gym I thought this movie was going to be about how a school gathered a bunch of the kids to have a sleepover in the school itself, while also showing the connections and lives of these kids as they were doing it. Instead it’s a movie about nothing and everything about doing nothing while being a teenager.

If you remember being a teen during the summer where the world was open, the only worries you had was what you were going to do for the day, what party you went to, and if you were lucky what girl/guy you got to kiss that night. Well guess what, The Myth of the American Sleepover is that. Nothing really happens here, at all, oh there’s one small conflict during the actual sleepover that a group of girls have but beyond that the movie just follows these kids as they spend their last day before school doing teenage things. Life for them seems to be tough, they can’t find love, they pick the wrong people, they want to go to parties, they drink, they make out, they lie to each other to impress the other, and pretty much do what every teenager does but how it seems so new to them and so dramatic.

The movie itself is boring, slow, and filled with nothing ever happening with dialog that is uninteresting to listen to. While at the same time the movie is interesting and has reminded me how much fun I had myself doing the exact same things when I was a teenager. I think this is what the movie is trying to do, if not it does a great job, in reminding the viewer that though we didn’t know it when we were that age but life was about as great as it was going to get for us. Weather was also beautiful, we had no real worries like we do as adults, and we got to spend our days just hanging out with friends talking about fun stuff, everything that interests us and makes us laugh, and how wild a feeling it was meeting and getting that first kiss from a new love interest. What else makes this boring movie become interesting, and well also why it’s boring, is that it’s so close to reality. Every character in this movie is someone I knew when I was at that age, the events that they go through I went through similar, and life played out pretty much like it does. Watching this reminded me of those moments of my life, but with no real plot points other than the teenagers, it’s just a slow movie to watch. Though each of these kids do a really good performance, though I think with being so close to the same age as their characters that their performance is more just them redoing what they already are doing. Still, I think for a movie with nothing happening in it that it’s one to watch just so it can remind you of how life was so grand as a teenager.
