BOTTOM LINE

It's informative, it's shocking, and most of all, it's thought provoking.

Nuclear warfare has always been a touchy subject since the days of the Cold War. The United States, along with Russia, is one of the leading manufacturers of nuclear weapons. Countdown to Zero examines the dangers of this immense power and urges its viewers to do something about the bombs and missiles just lying in wait for that fateful accident to one day occur.

In a speech, President John F. Kennedy called for the total abolishment of nuclear weapons. He stated that one was bound to cause harm, either by accident, miscalculation, or madness. The film explores these three scenarios and shows just how real and dangerous the threat of a nuclear war is. It's a frightening look at something people tend to think of as a shield for the country. When it comes to nukes, there is no shield.

Countdown to Zero is extremely informative when it comes to explaining nuclear weapons. It's actually a lot easier to acquire one than you think, although it's still no walk in the park. The documentary explains step by step the materials necessary, what kind of firing mechanism works best, and even how to successfully sneak the bomb into the country. It's actually very frightening and hopefully opens the eyes of the people in the White House.

There are plenty of interviews, with both experts and random citizens, and footage to exemplify the documentary's point of view. The main idea is that nuclear weapons are bad and that we're only truly safe when the entire world eliminates them entirely. For the most part, it does well to show that point. There are a few times where it could have been done better such as when they display the blast zone for a nuclear explosion. Showing the entire area and not just a small section of it would have made a much bigger impact on the audience.

Countdown to Zero opens your eyes to nuclear weapons in the same way that An Inconvenient Truth did for global warming. It's informative, it's shocking, and most of all, it's thought provoking. As the movie states, one of these bombs going off is just and accident waiting to happen and no matter how small the probability of that occurring is, it will happen eventually. It's only a matter of time.

This is a very scary subject matter. I don't believe it could ever be undone. Too many whack jobs want them. Too many greedy people have them. Thanks for a great review. I can't wait to see it.
