The Number 13

Aside from being released on Friday the 13th, principal photography wrapped on Friday, June 13, 2008.

When you think of horror movies or iconic characters from them, Friday the 13th or Jason usually can be found at the top of one or both of the lists. This is a franchise that has spawned 11 films over the course of 29 years and has defined the horror genre for many. It was finally due for a remake.

Technically, I should say re-imagination because it's nothing like the original. A group of teenagers travel to Crystal Lake for a weekend getaway in their upscale lake house, only for their trip to turn into their worst nightmare. It turns out the house is located near the remains of Camp Crystal Lake, a closed camp where years ago, a mother went on a killing rampage for the death of her son, Jason. With his mother dead, Jason returns to extract revenge on any who cross his path.

I guess I'll start with what you all want to know; Jason. We've seen many depictions of him in the past, each different than the rest in their own special way, but this Jason stands out the most. Some films he is depicted as human while in others, he is an unstoppable monster. In this version, you see both. This is a Jason who plans things out, who sets traps for his victims. This Jason is not unstoppable because of some supernatural forces or such but because he is simply that good at killing you. He is fast, strong, and one person I would not want to run into in the middle of the woods. Night or day, it doesn't matter; Jason will find you and kill you.

Speaking of killing, the victims in the film are your usual cast of idiots and hotties that are only interested in three things; sex, drugs, and alcohol. There are plenty of ridiculous moments that can't be taken seriously and could have been left out. Some of the characters are great, Chewie, while others you are actually rooting for Jason to hurry up and kill, Trent.

There are tons of references to the classic Friday the 13th films, mainly Part 2 and 3 from what I saw. You see Jason in his various forms including wearing a sack and his signature hockey mask. You also witness his psychological dependence on his mother and how it controls him. Those who have seen Part 2 will know what I am talking about. The music has changed to more heavy rock than the softer and ominous tones of the past but the creepy "ki ki ki, ma, ma, ma" can be heard throughout. There is also another traditional Jason moment from previous films but I won't spoil the fun. You'll have to see that for yourself.

It was about time for Friday the 13th to be remade and I say kudos for not completely butchering the series, although it could really only go up from where it was. Derek Mears does a great job as Jason and it is him who carries the entire film. It has it's moments of both good and bad, but you can't expect much from the horror genre these days. With elements from your traditional horror film along with a new look at the franchise; Friday the 13th is a slasher film worth watching.

The old Jason Is back!

I am not one for horror movies, but this was good. It was shocking, scary and funny at the same time. It went old school with new age ways. I recommended it already to people who just adore scary movies.

This is not "old Jason".

Disappointed when I heard about the remake and even more after seeing it. Very rushed to make sure they included key storylines and I didn't like Jason in the least. It might as well have been Roy doing the killing again.

I think this remake had been

I think if this remake had been the released as the original the Jason series would not have ran for so long. The movie was completely predictable and at times it was not a horror film we were watching but a porn film.
