Show: Gary Unmarried Season/Volume: The Complete First Season Starring: Jay Mohr, Ryan Malgarini, Al Madrigal, Ed Begley Jr. Studio: ABC Studios Runtime: 430 minutes Release Date: February 9, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 3 Rating: ( )Grade: B+ Bonus Features The Chemistry Of Comedy, Planet Begley, Tuesday On The Set With Jay, Gary Unhinged: Bloopers Gary is recently divorced and trying to balance his new single life with raising his two children and dealing with his ex wife. The show has a fairly simple set up as the comedy comes from Gary trying to date, Gary & his ex-wife Allison “fighting” or competing over their children, and typical parenting issues. Early on the show is set-up, one liner, set-up, one liner, heavy laugh track and repeat. But as the show continues on and the actors get a better grip on their characters the episodes are stronger. There are jokes that will have the whole family laughing and some that will go over younger kids’ heads; but nothing stood out as wildly inappropriate. One thing about “Gary Unmarried” though that drove me crazy was all the yelling. Gary and Allison do nothing but yell their lines even when they are just having a normal conversation and her voice is very shrill. Watching this for extended amounts of time can possibly give you a headache, I know it did for me. Be prepared for the fact that throughout the first season (as with most shows) they were still trying to figure out what worked and what didn’t. So Gary goes from a steady relationship to just being friends with the girl to her gone, the daughter changes after the first episode, and Allison goes from engaged to single. Maybe by season two things smooth out and the show can focus just on the comedy. |
