"Gossip Girl" season three is the continuation of the life and times of six super-privileged young people in New York's Upper East Side. Why is this important? Because apparently, these people can do whatever whenever they want with their parents' money and not any pay consequences.  Most of the episodes seem like free advertising for the designer du jour without any real advancement of plot, if in fact, there is a plot. There are lies, there is cheating, there is deceit, or just in-your-face "I don't care what I do, but I'll beg for your forgiveness afterward" kind of behavior.

What is the appeal of this show? Rich kids gone wild? The general premise and plot lines are thin and dicey and none of the characters are remotely likeable. They are shallow and wooden with the only marginally-redeemable character being Blair, but even she becomes an intolerable harpy by the end of the season. For such a coniving rich girl, she sure is naive. These are not the people I want to live viacriously through and hopefully parents everywhere are dispelling the myth that 99% of the world's young population does not act this way, rich or otherwise.

I suppose the CW viewership has the median age of 13 or is braindead.

The writing is vapid and the performances are either completely over the top (Michelle Trachtenberg) or phoned in: Ed "I'm Chuck Bass" Westwick (no one cares) and Blake "anything but" Lively. I weep for the upcoming Green Lantern movie. If I see this girl in one more magazine ad, I think I'm going to be sick. The September issue of Vogue has more personality than this wannabe actress.

I guess "Gossip Girl" is safe with its two million tween viewers each week. Let's just hope they don't idolize Blair and the rest of Manhattan's young elite too much. The fourth season will premiere The CW on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 9/8c .
