Shaun White fails to win medal at Sochi Winter Olympics

'Huawei': A foreshadowing name?

Chinesepod's Carlie discusses the meaning of the name 'Huawei' in light of the recent national security concerns of the Whitehouse

Snowboarder Shaun White failed to win his third Olympic medal in the men’s halfpipe competition. The Associated Press has reported that the snowboarding star did not medal and finished the competition in a disappointing fourth place. The Bleacher Report noted that White finished behind Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov, who won the gold and Japan’s Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka who earned the silver and bronze medals. After the qualifying rounds, White was still leading the pack, but that all changed in the final when the kid nicknamed “I-Pod” won with his trick called Yolo. White fell while attempting the same trick. The news is one of the most shocking storylines to come out of Sochi thus far. White came into the event as the heavy favorite and was expected to win another gold medal. He has owned the halfpipe competition since 2006 when he took home the gold in Turin. He was also untouchable in the 2010 Games and again came in first, but so it wasn’t meant to be in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The 27-year-old dropped out of the slopestyle event that was completed earlier this week in order to concentrate on winning his third straight gold medal in the halfpipe. That dream is now unattainable for the man who has been the best snowboarder of his era. Maybe White will be back in 2018.
