Marvel and Netflix team up to create four serialized programs and a mini-series

The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel's most popular characters exclusively to the world's leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs leading to a mini-series programming event.

Led by a series focused on "Daredevil," followed by "Jessica Jones," "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage," the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell's Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel's "The Defenders" mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling.

This new original TV deal follows last year's landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm. Netflix members can currently enjoy a wide range of Disney, ABC TV and Disney Channel films and shows across the 41 countries where Netflix operates.

Marilyn Manson to Appear in TV Show 'Once Upon a Time'

"Once Upon a Time" is going to the dark side.

Marilyn Manson will be joining ABC's fairy tale drama in the third season as a voice guest star, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

In the eighth episode, expected to air mid-November, Manson will make his "Once Upon a Time" debut voicing the character of The Shadow, who has already been seen this season. (The Shadow first appeared at the end of season two.)

"We've always been enormous fans of Marilyn Manson," creators/executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz told Rolling Stone, who first broke the news, in a joint statement. "We wanted to cast someone with the vocal ability to make our skin crawl."

This season, the motley crew of Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Regina (Lana Parrilla), Captain Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Charming (Josh Dallas) have been thrust into the dark world of Neverland, with the mission to save Henry (Jared Gilmore) from the villainous Peter Pan (Robbie Kay) and the Lost Boys.

Season three has seen a slew of recurring players appear on the small screen, including Jamie Chung, Sean Maguire, Rose McIver, Julian Morris, Sarah Bolger and the upcoming appearance of Joanna Garcia.

The CAA-repped Manson appeared as himself on Showtime's "Californication" and starred in Sundance title "Wrong Cops." His most recent album, Born Villain, was released in 2012.

"Once Upon a Time" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

The 65th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are underway at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the ceremony, which is being broadcast live on CBS.

AMC's Breaking Bad notched its first outstanding drama win, while ABC's Modern Family took outstanding comedy series. HBO's Behind the Candelabra won big, taking best miniseries or movie. Star Michael Douglas and director Steven Soderbergh also took home statuettes. Modern Family won outstanding comedy series, though its stars were shut out in the acting categories.

Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie) won the evening's first award, for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, walking off without giving much of a speech. Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfield won the comedy writing award for 30 Rock, marking Fey's eighth win. (She has six statuettes for 30 Rock and two for Saturday Night Live). Tony Hale (Veep) nabbed outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series and his Veep costar Julia Louis-Dreyfus won outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Modern Family's Gail Mancuso became the second woman ever to win outstanding directing for a comedy series, and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) nabbed outstanding lead actor in a comedy series.

Late Homeland writer Henry Bromell won the Emmy for outstanding writing in a drama series, and Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn won outstanding supporting actress in a drama. In an upset win, Bobby Cannavale nabbed outstanding supporting actor in a drama for Boardwalk Empire. Jeff Daniels took home a win for lead drama actor in The Newsroom.

Netflix notched a win with David Fincher's outstanding drama directing award for House of Cards. The Colbert Report took home wins for outstanding variety series and writing for a variety series. James Cromwell took home a statuette for outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie for American Horror Story: Asylum.

Marvel Readying 'Agent Carter' Series

As Marvel is poised to launch its first scripted venture next week with ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the comic book and entertainment company may be prepping another drama inspired by characters in the feature films.

Marvel is in the early stages of prepping a potential TV series based on Agent Carter, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, though no deals are currently in place.

Agent Carter is a one-shot set to be released Sept. 24 as an extra on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray. Agent Carter takes place a year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger and follows Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) girlfriend Agent Carter (portrayed by Hayley Atwell) as she builds her career as a secret agent while the hero is frozen in ice. (Worth noting: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was based on Item 47, an original short included on The Avengers DVD.) It's unclear if Atwell would reprise her role should the project officially move forward. (ABC and Marvel declined comment.)

No network is currently attached, though Marvel Entertainment is housed at ABC parent company Disney, making the network home to S.H.I.E.L.D. a likely candidate.

For Marvel, the potential project comes as the company is readying its Captain America follow-up, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with Evans reprising his role. Revenge star Emily VanCamp will play Agent 13 -- Carter's niece -- in the sequel.

Word of the project comes as comics-inspired fare continues to be hot at the broadcast networks. The CW is also developing a spinoff of Arrow featuring The Flash, with Glee's Grant Gustin attached to play the speedster.

'Breaking Bad' Spinoff Moving Forward at AMC

AMC is moving forward with its Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul.

After several weeks of heated negotiations, the basic cable network has inked a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television for the series' next iteration. "As conceived, the new series is based on the show's popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul," the studio and network confirmed in a joint statement, adding: "plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White's lawyer."

The series is expected to star Bob Odenkirk, who has played Saul for several seasons, with writer-producer Peter Gould set to run the effort, as it was Gould who created the character back in season two. Bad creator Vince Gilligan, who conceived of the spinoff with Gould, will remain involved, and noted in late July that it was his "fervent wish" that the spinoff move forward. At that time, Odenkirk added: "I'd do it in a second." A formal series order won't come until Gould, Gilligan and Odenkirk have deals finalized, a topic on which the network and studio declined comment.

Had talks with AMC fallen through, there were several other distributors, including Netflix, that were set to pounce with rich offers, say several sources with knowledge of the situation. Like Bad, the series will be produced by Sony, where Gilligan spent several years under an overall deal. He has yet to re-up and has fast become the most in-demand showrunner in town.

The news arrives as Bad is set to ends its run in less than a month. Its final eight-episode arc has wowed critics and bloggers alike. "The entire run of Breaking Bad has been remarkable and, as I've stated in the past, I don't think any TV series got out of the blocks and reached greatness faster than Breaking Bad," THR's chief TV critic Tim Goodman wrote of the Bryan Cranston starrer in July. In August, it returned with a record high of 5.9 million viewers, up 102 percent year over year, with an 87 percent surge in the key 18-49 demo.

The move forward comes as AMC has struggled to launch its dark freshman drama Low Winter Sun, which is losing more than 50 percent of its Breaking Bad viewership. Following this week's cancellation of The Killing -- and with critical darling Mad Men signing off in 2014 -- the spinoff couldn't come at a better time for the network. Looking ahead, AMC is prepared to launch two new dramas next year: 1980s computer drama Halt & Catch Fire and period piece Turn.

Saul first appeared in the 2009 episode "Better Call Saul," which saw Walt (Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) employ the criminally-minded attorney to get one of their dealers, Badger (Matt Jones), out of legal trouble. The episode quickly made Odenkirk's character a fan favorite and introduced his series of cheesy TV commercials to the Bad universe.

'The Killing' Canceled -- Again

AMC has canceled The Killing for the second time.

"We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with a fourth season of The Killing," AMC said in a statement. "We want to thank our great partners at Fox Television Studios, creator Veena Sud, an extraordinary cast and the dedicated fans who watched."

After its revival, the third season of The Killing was largely in line with the second in ratings. The third season opened to a steady 1.8 million viewers (563,000 adults 18-49) before dipping in the middle and rising back up to 1.5 million viewers in its summer finale. That number bested the sophomore run's finale, but was still a long way from the record 2.7 million viewers that first tuned in to the drama when it opened on April 3, 2011.

"Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of all three seasons of The Killing. We’re especially gratified to have orchestrated a unique deal with AMC for season three that included a bold partnership with Netflix," FTVS said in a statement. "While we would have loved to produce a fourth season for AMC, FTVS is immensely grateful to everyone involved with this moving series: our brilliant cast, led by Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman and season three's Peter Sarsgaard, our stellar executive producer, Veena Sud, a remarkable writing and producing team, and a tireless, dedicated crew. Most of all, FTVS thanks the terrific fans of The Killing, who communicated their appreciation for the show throughout its run."

The Killing, which lost viewers' trust after failing to answer its central "Who killed Rosie Larsen?" question during its freshman season, returned for a second season to see its ratings fall nearly 30 percent, drawing the ax at AMC. Following a deal with FTVS, AMC and Netflix, the series was revived for a rebooted third season featuring a new case and largely new cast (only Enos and Kinnaman returned). The series, which was based on the Danish entry Forbrydelsen and developed under Sud, concluded season three's central case during its finale, serving as closure compared with its freshman run.

For AMC's part, the cabler has drama pilots Line of Sight, starring The Walking Dead's David Morrissey, in the works. The network recently ordered to series 1980s computer drama Halt & Catch Fire, starring Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace, as well as period drama Turn, based on the book Washington's Spies, from Nikita's Craig Silverstein. This summer, AMC will bid critical darling Breaking Bad farewell and will close the book on Mad Men in 2014. Freshman cop drama Low Winter Sun has failed to hold on to much of its Breaking Bad lead-in, which doesn't bode well for a second season.

Peter Capaldi Tapped to Play Next 'Doctor Who'

Doctor Who has named its 12th Doctor.

During a Sunday BBC One special, actor Peter Capaldi was revealed as the latest to topline the 50-year-old British franchise. He'll join the sci-fi series when current lead Matt Smith departs the role after this year's Christmas special.

The news came with a great deal of pomp and circumstance, with both BBC One and stateside cable network BBC America devoting an hour to the live reveal.

“If I had to pick someone I’d pick him," said Smith, teasing the announcement earlier in the broadcast. "I’m excited because I know what’s coming, and he’s going to have a blast.”

Likely best known for his portrayal of foul-mouthed government communications guru Malcolm Tucker in Armando Iannucci's The Thick of It, Capaldi has been eyed as a favorite to take on Doctor Who for some time.

His casting takes the series back towards the more "classic" Doctors, such as those portrayed by Tom Baker and Peter Davison. The latest iteration of the Doctor Who series, which kicked off in 2005, originally saw Christopher Eccleston in the role before younger actors David Tennant and Smith took it on.

Capaldi, 55, has an Academy Award for writing and directing the 1993 short Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life. In the Loop, World War Z and the upcoming Julian Assange flick The Fifth Estate are among his biggest film credits and his TV work includes The Hour, Torchwood and Skins.

He also has several ties to the series. In 1974, a 15-year-old Capaldi wrote of his love of the series in a letter published in Radio Times. He also acted alongside Tennant's Doctor in the 2008 episode of the series, "The Fires of Pompeii."

While in art school, Capaldi was also the lead singer in a punk rock band with Doctor Who super-fan and late-night host Craig Ferguson.

65th Primetime Emmy Award Nominations Announced

'Glee' Star Cory Monteith Dies at 31

Glee star Cory Monteith was found dead at Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. He was 31.

The actor was found at noon Saturday on the hotel's 21st floor, Vancouver police said in a news conference. He checked into the hotel July 6, and was expected to check out Saturday. When Monteith missed his checkout time at noon, hotel staff went to his room and discovered his body.

Police said Monteith was with other people Friday night. An examination of hotel video footage showed him returning to his room alone early Saturday morning. Police believe he was alone when he died. No cause of death was given and no foul play is suspected, police said. Police are questioning the people he was with Friday night. It was unclear if he was with any Glee castmates or his longtime girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

In March, Monteith voluntarily checked himself into rehab for substance abuse. He departed the facility in April. That stint marked his second trip to rehab. He previously checked into rehab when he was 19. It was unclear why the Calgary native had checked into the Vancouver hotel. He was a frequent visitor to Vancouver during hiatus.

Family, Vancouver police said, have just been informed. He had been deceased for several hours when his body was discovered.

"We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," representatives for the actor told THR in a statement.

Glee executive producers, producers 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Broadcasting Co. said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

A spokesperson for Michele told THR, "We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea's privacy during this devastating time." Michele -- who plays Finn's onscreen love, Rachel -- and Monteith went public with their real-life romance a year ago.

Glee vocal producer Alex Anders said of Monteith, with whom he frequently worked in the recording studio: "Heartbroken by the loss of my friend @CoryMonteith Praying for his family and loved ones. Such a good hearted man that will be sorely missed."

Monteith's Glee co-star Mark Salling, who played Finn's best friend, Puck, took to Twitter on Saturday as news of his friend's death had spread with a poignant, "no." Castmate Dot-Marie Jones used all caps to convey her grief.

Added Adam Shankman, who directed Monteith in Glee's Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed episode: "I will always cherish you in my heart. Thank you for so many wonderful days. I love you," he tweeted along with a picture of the late actor with Michele on-set.

Said castmember Dot-Marie Jones, who played Finn's former football coach, on Twitter: "I have no words! My heart is broken Cory was not only a hell of a friend he was one amazing men [sic] that I will hold close to my heart forever."

Monteith has played Finn Hudson, the lovable boy next door, on Glee since it debuted in 2009. He also has a role in the upcoming indie All the Wrong Reasons. It's unclear how Monteith's sudden passing will impact production on Glee, which is poised to premiere its fifth season on Sept. 19.

Monteith became a face for the Fox musical shortly after the series premiered, rocketing to fame as the first hit from the series, a Monteith-led cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" turned Glee into a worldwide phenomenon. The series airs all over the world and has spawned scores of gold records on the Billboard charts for its ever-growing list of singles and soundtracks.

After Monteith's character graduated from the high school-set series, Monteith continued to have a major presence on the series. Fox and the Glee creators briefly considered doing a New York-set spinoff featuring Monteith, Michele and Chris Colfer (Kurt) before opting instead to do a split-location format in season four.

When he checked into the rehab facility last March -- with the support of Glee producers and Michele as well as the network -- his character, who was slated to return for a handful of episodes of Glee's fourth season, was reduced to accommodate the young actor. Finn spent the bulk of season four searching for an identity and finally settled on studying to become a teacher after returning to co-coach his former glee club. Monteith was slated to be a series regular for season five, one of only a handful of original stars to still be featured in that capacity.

Here's the full statement from acting Vancouver Police Chief Doug LePard:

"Shortly after noon Saturday, the Vancouver Police received a call from the BC Ambulance Service regarding a sudden death in a room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel at 1038 Canada Place in downtown Vancouver.

Police attended within minutes of the call and paramedics advised the man in the room was clearly deceased. Coroner’s staff did attend the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith, who achieved great fame on the popular TV series Glee.

Before I give further information, on behalf of the Vancouver Police, I want to pass on our condolences to the family, friends, castmates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith. As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.

Mr. Monteith checked into the hotel in July 6th and was due to check out of the room today. There were others with Mr. Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died.

When he missed his checkout time, staff went to the room at noon and found his body.

We know there will be considerable interest in this case, and we have detectives assigned to the case who attended with our Forensic Identification Unit to examine the scene, to ensure to the extent possible that there are no unanswered questions.

Hotel video has been secured as well as room access records. Our investigators have spoken with hotel staff, who are providing the utmost in cooperation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The Coroner will be determining the next steps with respect to establishing cause of death, but all indications are that there was no foul play."

Showtime Cancels 'The Borgias'

Showtime is ending The Borgias after three seasons.

The drama from Neil Jordan will end its run with its June 16 episode, which will now serve as series finale, Showtime announced Wednesday.

Borgias is one of the few remaining holdovers from Robert Greenblatt's era as head of Showtime. In the past year, the premium cable network has bid farewell to a handful of his other efforts including Weeds and The Big C. Dexter will also end its run after the upcoming eighth season, which premieres this month.

Borgias, which stars Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI,was originally planned to run four seasons to parallel the duration of its Showtime predecessor The Tudors.

The decision to end the series comes as Showtime is prepping another religion-themed drama, The Vatican, starring Friday Night Lights favorite Kyle Chandler. The pilot, which reunites the actor with Showtime entertainment president David Nevins, hails from House's Paul Attanasio and Ridley Scott.

"It has been an honor to work with the great Neil Jordan and the incomparable Jeremy Irons on The Borgias," Nevins said. "Neil has written nearly every episode of this series himself. His extraordinary storytelling combined with Jeremy's fascinating portrayal of the infamous Pope Alexander VI, has made for truly outstanding television that will live on. I look forward to future collaborations."

Season to date, Borgias is averaging 2.4 million viewers across multiple platforms -- on par with its sophomore outing. Its most recent episode (the eighth of the season) delivered a series high. The show has earned a total of 10 Emmy nominations to date including wins for costumes and its main-title theme music. Irons also picked up a Golden Globe nomination.

Added Jordan: “I never thought I would make a cable series and have enjoyed every minute of it. For a variety of reasons we won’t be doing a fourth season, but, "The Prince" [the final episode], when I wrote it and shot it, did seem like the end of a journey for the family. Whatever bonded them as a family dies in this episode, and the center of the drama for me was always the family. I want to thank Showtime and David Nevins for their unstinting support over the last three years, and look forward to working with them in the future.“

For his part, Nevins this year will use the final season of Dexter to launch freshman Hollywood fixer drama Ray Donovan this month and Homeland as a springboard for rookie drama Masters of Sex.
