Funimation celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to celebrate, they have put their biggest franchise on sale, Dragon Ball Z.

DBZ is the franchise that put Funimation on the map all those years ago, and fans can save up to 60% on season sets for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT on DVD or Blu-ray. The discounts are also good towards pre-orders of Dragon Ball Z: Season Four and Five on Blu-ray, available in May and June, respectively. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s The Bible is shattering sales records in its first week of home video release, selling 525,000 units to become the top-selling TV miniseries of all time.

Additionally, The Bible is now the No. 1-selling TV on DVD in the last five years.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming response from audiences to The Bible miniseries,” said Downey and Burnett in a statement. “First, the show was No. 1 on History, now it is No. 1 on Blu-ray and DVD and has been No. 1 in every country in which it aired. We feel incredibly blessed that we were able to bring this amazing love story to life on the screen. It is our hope that folks everywhere will continue to be touched by the message of the Bible and cherish these stories at home with their families for years to come. This is just the beginning.”

The Bible hit a ratings high with its March 3 debut, raking in 13.1 million viewers on History. Its Easter two-hour finale pulled in 11.7 million viewers, while each additional installment of the 10-part series hovered above the 10 million mark.

"Mark and Roma have created a work of broad cultural significance that has resonated deeply with audiences, and The Bible has quickly become a must-own DVD that families can enjoy together at home time and time again,” said Mary Daily, president and chief marketing officer of worldwide marketing at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Fox Home Entertainment will release George Lucas' Star Wars films in three distinct Blu-ray sets in September.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga will feature all six live-action features, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes and an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives.

A Prequel Trilogy will include Episodes I through III (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith), and an Original Blu-ray Trilogy set will include Episodes IV-VI (1977's A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Backand Return of the Jedi).

The Complete Saga will carry a suggested retail price of $139.99, and the Trilogy sets will go for $69.99. Amazon was taking pre-orders at lower prices on Thursday.

"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn said Thursday at CES. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."

It's Complicated

The sales juggernaut that is "Avatar" showed no signs of slowing in Week 2 of the blockbuster film's home video release, with the 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment title again topping both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

The film's nearest competitor was Universal Studios' "It's Complicated," which debuted at No. 2 on the overall sales chart but sold fewer than 25% as many copies as "Avatar."

On Blu-ray Disc, the disparity was even greater: "It's Complicated" also debuted at No. 2 on the chart but sold just 6% as many copies as "Avatar." In its second week in stores, "Avatar" generated 42% of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc release, down slightly from 49% in Week 1. "It's Complicated," a comedy with $112.7 million in theatrical receipts, racked up only 10% of its total unit sales from the Blu-ray Disc version.

In rental stores, however, "It's Complicated" was the easy winner -- even though it's the first Universal title that won't be available at either Netflix or Redbox until 28 days after its release.

Even so, "It's Complicated" bowed at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ending May 2, beating "Avatar," which generated 78% as much rental action as the Universal comedy.

The only other new release to make the top 10 on either of the two main sales or rental charts was the Sony Pictures fantasy "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which debuted at No. 5 on First Alert and No. 7 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart.

'Avatar' tops home video sales for 2010

"Avatar" is already the year's top-selling home entertainment title after just four days in release.

Consumers snapped up 6.7 million copies of the first "Avatar" DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, which are 2D versions of the action fantasy offering no bonus features. "Avatar" sales quickly have outpaced the 6.5 million units sold of Summit/Universal's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which had been 2010's hottest disc release to date.

Fox Home Entertainment began selling the "Avatar" discs Thursday to coincide with Earth Day. The James Cameron epic marked a format record by moving 1.5 million Blu-ray copies in its first day on store shelves.

FHE will release special edition versions of the James Cameron epic in the fourth quarter, with those versions set to include special features of the sort normally included on home entertainment discs. A 3D Blu-ray version of "Avatar" will be released early next year.

There's no stopping "Sherlock Holmes."

Aided by a dearth of new high-powered theatrical releases, the Warner Home Video actioner remained on top of the national home video sales and rental charts the week ending April 18.

"Sherlock" had no real competition for the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, snagging the No. 1 for the second consecutive week. 20th Century Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" and Warner's "The Blind Side" also repeated at No. 2 and No. 3.

The top-selling new release, the 20th Century Fox comedy "Crazy on the Outside," debuted at No. 4 after a limited theatrical release. The film marks the directorial debut of Tim Allen and opened in theaters without being screened for critics.

On Home Media Magazine's rental chart, "Sherlock" was No. 1 for the third consecutive week, with a modest 18% dip in rental demand. As they did on the sales chart, "Alvin" and "Blind Side" again finished at No. 2 and No. 3, with demanding slipping 18% and 24%, respectively.

"Pirate Radio," a comedy from Universal Studios that generated $8 million in theaters, debuted at No. 4, while "Crazy on the Outside" bowed at No. 10.

On the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart, "Sherlock" regained the top spot after spending a week at No. 2. The previous week's top-selling Blu-ray Disc release, Warner's "Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy," fell to No. 5.

File this one under Least Surprising News Ever: George Lucas’ team have finally confirmed that they’re hard at work at releasing the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray.

It’s not really shocking – “head of fan relations” Steve Sansweet said they were considering it last year, dropping hints that it would be the ultimate set.

Fade cut to this weekend, and IGN got to talk to Sansweet, who blabbed they were actively toiling away on it, but distanced himself from his previous “ultimate” hype.

"We have been at work for a couple of years working on – I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff – but a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures."

Isn’t it funny how they can keep “discovering” new stuff just when there’s the chance of some cash to be made from fans looking to own the series. Wonder what they’ll find for the inevitable 3D home release?

Sansweet wouldn’t be locked down to a firm date, but The Digital Bits' source Jawas are whispering that October 2011 is a possible date.

DreamWorks to go back and convert old Shrek movies to 3D

Speaking recently at the National Association of Broadcasters convention DreamWorks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg refused to make any more derogatory comments towards upconverted 3D films like CLASH OF THE TITANS (he had previously said that "you cannot do anything that is of a lower grade and a lower quality" than TITANS). Maybe that's because he has some 3D conversion of his own up his sleeve.

Katzenberg announced that DWA will be converting the first three SHREK films into 3D and releasing them on 3D Blu-ray. Whether or not they'll see a limited theatrical re-release remains to be seen. Before you get too freaked about more crappy upconverted 3D movies, remember that movies like SHREK are basically created in 3D anyway and it's just a matter of rendering the so-called "second eye."

That's all well and good but would you be interested in paying another $35 for a 3D Blu-ray of a film that you've seen a couple times? And have 3D TVs really become that mainstream that we're producing content directly for that market share? I guess I shouldn't question Katzenberg who's probably done his share of studies on this but as a big fan of Blu-ray AND animation, I'm still not really interested in this.

If you've been wanting to take a return trip to Pandora, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has you covered. James Cameron told The Wall Street Journal the company will release his mega-blockbuster, Avatar, on Blu-ray and DVD this April 22nd. Just in time for the globular masses celebrating Earth Day.

For those of you looking for all the bells and whistles, you'll have to wait a bit longer. Cameron told the newspaper, "That's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime." A spokesman for Fox confirmed that the 3-D version is still in the conceptual stage and doesn't foresee a November release.

The Oscar-nominated director also spoke briefly about a sequel. Cameron would like to do it "cheaper and faster" and have the second installment serve as "a continuation of the same characters." He then added "we're going to widen the universe in quotes, meaning the envelope of the setting of the story."

Avatar's Earth Day release date is not just a witticism. The filmmaker wants to shed a green light on the film with good reason. "We're not going to bequeath to our children a world that's a sustainable world at the rate that we're going," he said. "It's gonna take a fundamental reboot of the way we view our relationship with the natural world and each other and with business and with the economy...that indefinite growth is not a good thing."

Can you justify shelling out the cash for a bare bones disc when the special edition is right around the corner. Is Avatar mania so strong that people will double dip?
