Zooey Deschanel (New Girl)

Zooey Deschanel: The Interview (New Girl)
Interesting Tidbits

Other than acting, Zooey is really talented musician as well. She can play the piano and the ukulele.

Zooey Deschanel has had the chance to work with a lot of comedic actors, such as Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, Danny McBride, Paul Rudd, and James Franco. She has also appeared in numerous other movies, but decided to take a short hiatus from acting to tour with her band, She & Him. However, Zooey is now back on the acting scene, but this time she has decided to try out television instead of movies. Her new show is entitled “New Girl” and is set to premiere Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 9pm on FOX. Shakefire.com had the privilege of being a part of a conference call interview with Zooey.

SHAKEFIRE: You’ve had the chance to work with a lot of funny people in your career. How did you get into comedic acting?
ZOOEY DESCHANEL: I know I’ve always been considered a comedic actress and I love it. I think it all started in school because I had so much fun doing plays that were also comedies. I just love doing funny stuff on the show.

SF: You have been in a lot of movies and this is your first exclusive TV show. How did you adjust with the change from being in movies to being on TV?
ZD: I think I adjusted pretty well. I love being busy and having a lot of content in my life. It’s a lot more to memorize, but I like going on set everyday and working with the same awesome people. Working on a TV show also allows me to develop a working relationship with the cast and making it long lasting if the show goes on.

SF: What attracted you to the role of Jessica Day, your character on your new show “New Girl?” Are there any similarities or differences between you and her?
ZD: I read the script, after they offered me the part, and I thought she was a perfect fit for me. I was blown away with how funny the script was and how Jess loves being herself and is not afraid to be herself. I can see a lot of myself in Jess and she reminds me a lot myself when I was 13 years old.

SF: Jessica makes up theme songs for herself and sings quite a bit on the show. Have you ever made up a theme song for yourself and can you sing it for us?
ZD: Jessica sings very openly on the show. Its a character quirk she has to express herself. I sing with my band, but am not sure if I want to sing my theme song. I made it up when I was 7 years old and my parents keep singing it to me to this very day. I’m sorry, but it’s really embarrassing.

SF: What makes this show different from the other shows on TV today? How do you plan to get a loyal viewer fan base established?
ZD: The show is really funny and the writers are great at what they do. It is different and more of a romantic comedy with a few sitcom elements mixed in. Also, it’s not purely comedy and we hope the viewers will care for the characters and what happens to them. Also, the cast is awesome and I feel really special to be a part of this show.

Zooey was really easy to talk to and gave a lot of good information about the show. She is a comedic actress, but is really serious when it comes to things she is passionate about. I had the chance to watch the pilot on Itunes and thought it was hilarious. If you don’t believe me, feel free to check it out every Tuesday starting September 20, 2011 at 9pm on FOX.
