A Lot Like Birds is a post-hardcore post-rock band and their album Conversation Piece is post-good. As I post-listened to this collection of post-songs, I post-felt that my ears were post-bleeding. That may be a tad post-harsh, but once again a band totally screws up their talent by having someone scream all over their songs making them almost intolerable to suffer through.
It's loud. And I assume they are proud of what they've accomplished. But I'm not. Sure, there is some good music to be found here, if you can accept the raw throaty screaming lyrics that stomp all over it. It's possible I might even enjoy the lyrics, I know I did when they weren't being screamed, but the screaming just ruins everything. A quick search around the Internet showed me a number of other reviews for this album where it was called "superb" and given ratings like 4.5 out of 5, or 9 out of 10. From this I must conclude that all of these reviewers were paid and didn't actually listen to the album. I can assure you, I am not paid. I didn't even get a free copy of this album, and was forced to listen to it seated at my desk streaming the screaming from a website. Did that influence this review? Sure, but not as much as the screaming.
To hear the screaming for yourself, go to their Facebook page where you can stream their whole album and experience it chained to your desk just like me.
Perhaps you might be thinking that this review isn't serious, that I'm joking. And that may be true, but how I can be expected to take a hardcore band seriously when two of their members have Bieber hair?
I really cannot recommend this album to anyone.
