Wow. I didn’t recognize any of the characters in this cartoon other than young Superman/Superboy. Either I’m getting old (likely) or they’re using some really whacky characters to fill out this series (very likely). Beyond the Super lad himself, the cast is rounded out by such stellar folks as Lightning Lad, Brainiac 5, Bouncing Boy and Saturn Girl. There are more kooky individuals in the mix, but those should give you a good idea of what you’re dealing with.

As far as I can tell, the basic premise of the show is that those somewhat lesser known, uh, heroes are from the 31 century. They needed help battling evil and went back in time to kidnap Superman to aid in their fight. The result is a show that features lot of quirky powers and situations, as it’s not really bound by any ties to current continuity within the basic Superman story arc.

It’s also a show that’s definitely geared more towards kids. That’s not an issue in and of itself, just that I’m definitely not within the demographic that this is created for. That said, I could see how kids would probably dig this. I will cry foul however on the fact that this set is Volume 3 (3!!) from season one of the show. There are only 13 episodes in season one and they split them up into three volumes? This set contains the last five episodes of the season. This sort of money-grubbing technique is utterly ridiculous. Release them all on one set!

In the end, this is a decent little show. If you’ve got a young superhero in the making in your house, it might be worth your while. Buyer beware however that you’ll be forced to fork over money three times to put together the entire season if your kid ends up falling in love.
