"You can't teach an old dog new tricks." Or can you?

"New Tricks: Season Three is the continuation of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (i.e., cold cases). Our UCOS team consists of Detective Superintendent, Sandra Pullman, Ex-Detective Chief Superintendent, Jack Halford, Ex-Detective Chief Inspector Gerry Standing, and Ex-Detective Inspector, Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong, Garrow's Law).

Each of these "old dogs" has their own histories (that cross a lot of paths) and quirks:

  • Pullman: go getter with a prematurely-derailed climb up the corporate ladder and leader of this group
  • Halford: quick-tempered widower and first to be recruited
  • Standing: old-school cop and ladies' man with three ex-wives and four daughters, foodie
  • Lane: socially-inept and suffers from Obesessive Compulsive Disorder, recovering alcoholic

Luckily,  they can adapt to new technology and techniques to resolve unsolved cases. What's nice about "New Tricks" is that it's not your typical detective show. Each episode is a good balance of comedy and drama and lets the viewer see each character individually as well as the team as a whole clearly making this show an ensemble piece. There are eight episodes that range from good old fashioned "the husband dunnit" to witchcraft to family feuds (involving ice cream). You never know what the case du jour will be, but it will be a fun ride.

This award-winning series just finished its seventh season with season eight slated for 2011.
