Chris McCaughan is lead vocals for the group known as the Sundowners, who have put out their latest album titled Neon Fiction. The band and the album is somewhat an acoustic varity that features songs that are on a low key level where Chris McCaughan tries not to make his music be in your face as you listen. At times the songs are on a softer note with his vocals just a tad above speaking volume but with a pacing for singing. While the songs are somewhat slower when it comes to the tempos, the vocals might be more suited for a queit evening watching the sun go down, and while the lyrics won't make you change you point of view on life, Neon Fiction is an entertaining, well thought out, organized, and fun album.
What I noticed and I think I like the most about Neon Fiction is that it didn't sound like other bands. Neon Fiction was entertaining for the simiple fact that when I did my scroll test, that is I will listen to the album first, then on the second time I will listen to the opening, scroll to the middle, then scroll to then. I do this with every song on the album and it's a way to hear how some songs have similar beats. There's bands that the songs never changed any beat and the only difference I heard was with a few lyrics, but with Sundowners I was only able to hear one similarity, ok two similarities, the acoustic guitar and the vocals of Chris McCaughan. Let me note though that neither one sounded like previous songs, only that these two elements are performed well enough that they just stand out.
The songs are fun to listen to, even though they do have a mellow tone to them and depending on if you are depressed or in any down mood, they might go along with that mood. But they are also quirky and have a upbeat emotion to them. Chris McCaughan has a solid voice that even though he's not screaming out the lyrics he makes the songs strong and emotional. The minimul use of other instruments or playing them at a quick rate don't drag the songs down or make them any less powerful. And I might have noticed the guitar the most over the other instruments, there are other sounds being used in the songs that stand out as well. It's this well blending use of all the instruments working with the vocals that make Neon Fiction a fun album with catchy songs, beats that will give you a foot tapping beat, and an overall sound that connects with you.
