Based on the book “What Just Happened? Bitter Hollywood Tales from the Front Line”, What Just Happened starring Robert DeNiro, Robin Wright Penn, Sean Penn, Bruce Willis, and a slew of other actors and actresses is star studded but a dud of a film.  Since the material is from a Hollywood insider who is trying to make a satirical statement about the way things are run in Hollywood its safe to assume that 99% of every joke involved is an inside one.

Robert DeNiro plays a producer whose daily life is full of pressure from both the Movie Industry as well as his failed relationships with his wives and child. Many in my audience had no clue what the film was about and quite possibly many, the ones who didn’t walk out during the first hour, still had no idea when the film ended. While the film had some entertaining bits here and there the film revolved around one dimensional characters who lacked depth on many different levels and seemed to offer up real time scenario’s, the kind which most movie goers tend to be in the theater to forget. DeNiro? I’ve never seen him play such a pathetic character in all my years of following his career. His character has no backbone, no emotion, nothing. The only real lively character in the bunch was Michael Wincott (The Crow) who plays a director caught up in the negotiations of his Producer (Robert DeNiro) and a studio head (played by Catherine Keener). Bruce Willis played a humorous character but basically played himself playing one of his other characters so no big stretch there. The only other notable character to be found in the film would be John Tuturro who plays an agent with stomach issues. Funny, but not enough to pull this dud above water. I highly suggest waiting for a television viewing.
