Artist: Avril Lavigne Album: Goodbye Lullaby Members: Avril Lavigne Genre: Pop Label: RCA Tracks: 14 Type: LP Release Date: March 8, 2011 Discs: 1 Notes: Digital Review Rating: ( )Grade: B+ Other Issues: If you buy the deluxe album you get the CD plus a DVD and bonus tracks. If you are to believe what you read this album has deep meaning for Lavigne, and this might be true, but opening the album on a song named after your perfume is a slick move, especially for those who assume its just a cool sounding name for a song. Second track on the album, What The Hell, is the obvious single that seems to be a sacrifice to the radio Gods. Lavigne proves on this album that she has amazing range vocally, but this track is just some poppy fluff complete with electronic manipulation, and if you’ve seen the video its got so much product placement in it you’d think What The Hell was the soundtrack for some new Abby Dawn commercial (among other product placement in the video). So okay the album has a lot of odes to love lost and found on it which Lavigne tackles with great vocal clarity and a mish mash between her own style, Alanis Morrisette’s, and Dolores O’Riorden’s and there is a sense of repetativeness in a few of the songs on the album. At a few points on the album you just really feel like we've been here before with other artists as well. Yet vocal work on the album really is fantastic with Lavigne coming through strong on her poppier tunes and throwing down a great range of emotion to fit each song. Mind you it doesn’t feel like the Lavigne that burst on the scene in 2002 that was aimed at a certain demographic. Most of the tracks on this album are written by Lavigne, only five of the tracks on the fourteen track album share a co-write credit, two having been produced by Lavigne herself. The most stand out self written work on the album being Smile which is a catchy tune with great instrumentation and superb vocal work. All in all though it’s a pretty solid commercial album from an artist whose continued growth keeps throwing fans and critics curveballs with every album. There seems to be enough of a pop edge to cater to her fan demographic but a more mature sense that older fans will find well worth checking out. Its going to be interesting to see what comes next. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy. Pictures/Covers: |
