Artist: The Kickdrums Album: Meet Your Ghost Members: Alex Fitts, Matt Penttila Genre: DJ/Dance, Other, Pop, Rap/Hip Hop, Rock Label: Last Gang Records Tracks: 9 Release Date: June 28, 2011 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: B- Going into the first song of the album “Meet Your Ghost” by ‘The Kickdrums’, I thought I was in for a half hour of joyless sounds being considered as music. Here the opening track “Meet Your Ghost”, which is the same title as the album, is 3.35 minute long song that sounds as if the lead vocals is holding his nose as he sings. It’s a very nasally oriented sound that the vocals have with this song as well as with the second song. This first impression was not a good one. Even though I was trying to like the sound of the instruments I just couldn’t get past that nasal sound. Luckily enough though, that nasal sound does not last through the whole album. In fact by the time the fourth song was playing it sounded like a completely different group. This turn around from painful vocals to vocals that had a good pitch, a better tune then the first 2 songs, and enough changes in the levels that it really does sound as if it’s a different band. Which works out well for me because I was liking what I was hearing. With the song "Travel Should Take You Places" the sound of the song does exactly what the title of the song is, take you places that is. This one song has a nice hypnotic sound to it that had me wanting to sit back, close my eyes, and just let the song lead me to wherever. When I saw the title of the song I couldn't have picked a more fitting name than that to match this sound being played. One thing that I feel hurts bands is keeping with the same sound making their songs have a similar beat and sound. ‘The Kickdrums’, though not that great with the first two songs, turn out to be exactly what I really enjoy about listening to music, the mixture in sound. With one song sounding like a techno pop/rock song, then another that fits in with alternative, and even one with a hip/hop beat and sound to it I didn’t know what to expect to hear with the next song. Because of this nice range of genres being played in these songs I ended up liking “Meet Your Ghost” more than I would have said after hearing that first song. By the end ‘The Kickdrums’ gave me a half hour of songs that have a good beat, one that can easily become stuck in my head, and a rhythm that make the songs entertaining as well as interesting to listen to. If ‘The Kickdrums’ can keep from doing the nasal songs then they end up being a good band. |
