Before they became MTV mainstays, Twisted Sister had spent years slugging it out on the road by playing night after night at countless clubs across the tri-state area.  Their constant touring and dynamic live shows gained them an ever increasing devoted fanbase.  Making it possible for Twisted Sister to become the first band to headline and sell out The Palladium in New York City without having a radio single, a record deal or even an album.  This formative period in the band’s history is showcased in this compilation called, Club Daze: Volume 1 – The Studio Sessions.

Much of the material would be familiar to anyone who caught their shows in those early days.  And for those who weren’t there, several of these tracks have been previously available through their early self released singles, debut UK EP, Ruff Cuts or rerecorded for Under the Blade.  But this is the first time all these songs have been collected together on one CD.  In addition, there is a booklet with pretty extensive liner notes by Jay Jay French and Martin Popoff with contributions by Dee Snider.  They go over the history of the band during this time period and give personal recollections about all the songs.  There are also a number of photos from the band, roadies and management.  And there’s even a list of all the clubs they played.  So this is a real treat for all the SMFs out there.

Now this is the perfect gift for a hardcore Twisted Sister fan if they didn’t already purchase this album when it was originally released in 1999.  But since it’s been out of print for awhile, I’m sure there’s someone out there who will be happy to pick up this reissue.  Now if you’re not a huge fan, then this probably isn’t going to be the release for you.  Most of what you’ll hear is a band in development, as they progress from their early Glam Rock roots to their later Heavy Metal incarnation.  With only a couple of exceptions, nothing really has the catchy, memorable qualities of a “We’re Not Going To Take It,” so keep that in mind before you click the “buy it now” button.

Considering my favorite Twisted Sister song is the one they were filming a video for in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, I’m not sure this album is for me either.  But I gotta respect a band that takes the time to reward their devoted fans by giving them a glimpse into the past.  And letting them purchase something official with better sound quality, rather than what a bootlegger will try to charge you for their subpar product.  This kind of time capsule isn’t for everyone, but it is definitely a treat for the right fan.  More bands should probably take a cue from these guys.
