This comedy DVD naturally opens with trailers for other comedian’s DVDs. Excluding the trailer for Donald Glover, however, most of them are of the HUGELY disappointing and tired “black people do this, white people do that” variety. Can we leave that mess in 90’s along with mullets and rat-tails please?
Felipe Esparza has his own theme song that sounds like a pretty cool Mighty Might Boss Tones track and repeats his catch phrase, “What’s up, fool?” Felipe opens with his DVD title joke, which is still funny and tells us about his Last Comic Standing background.
I can see how he became a winner. His humor is very topical, relatable, and current. He covers Latino stereotypes, illegal immigrations, and gas prices (which I related to most acutely) all in the first ten minutes. His sleepy eyes are expressive and he rubs his belly as he talks the self-deprecating failures of dating and a “Captain Save-A-Hoe” joke.
Personally, I did not find him very funny. He’s not my taste in humor. Too many fat jokes, stereotypes, and jokes about people with disabilities. I prefer a very clever, dry, political wit. That said, I did smile and giggle quite a few times (particularly during the road trip segment). His expressive face and use of his hair as a prop definitely adds to his humor. I wouldn’t watch it again, but I can see why and how he’s popular.
Felipe has an accent, but I didn’t have much trouble understanding him. However, English subtitles are available for all to enjoy!
