Title: Horton Hears a Who Edition: Special Edition Genre: Animation, Family, Kids Starring: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Will Arnett, Carol Burnett, Jesse McCartney, Dan Fogler, Isla Fisher, Amy Poehler, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogan, Jaime Pressley Director: Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino, Steve Martino Studio: 20th Century Fox Runtime: 86 Minutes Release Date: December 9, 2008 Format: DVD Discs: 2 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: A+ Horton Hears A Who is by far the finest Seuss adaptation to date, even better then the earlier Seuss adaptations, but better still is the fine collection of bonus features. Kids will love it, they are intelligent enough to intrigue adults, and there is an all around good message intertwined in each one. First off this specific type of animation makes for a really great transfer on the film. If the DVD transfer looks this good you can only assume that the Blu-ray transfer is going to be flawless. Crisp sound and picture all around. As for the bonus features. A bonus short from the Ice Age franchise titled Surviving Sid will kick off the laughs as well as a sneak peek at Ice Age 3. Deleted scenes are layered in three different categories. One is the rough storyboard scenes which look great, some might recall the disappointing storyboard deleted scenes from Disney’s The Incredibles, Horton is superbly drawn, animated, and voiced. I had my doubts about sitting through them but I enjoyed them a lot. A nice alternate ending hangs in this section. The second layer is the nearly finished deleted scenes which are great as well and then finally the almost completed scenes. Animation screen tests, Bringing Seuss to screen, and a few others cover the art department and animation departments take on everything Seuss from character design to method to environment. The guys behind the scenes are real goofs but that’s what makes these sections so fun to watch. Some of my favorites on the disc are the more educational features such as Elephant: Fun Facts and Our Speck: Where Do We Fit In, which takes kids and has them explain the basic fundamentals behind the idea’s in the film such as environment, ecosystem, and the illustrious imaginings of our planet as a speck. Lastly there is a Simon Says type game and then pop the disc into your DVD-rom and animate your very own Who. Absolutely a disc worthy of being added to your collection. Enjoy. |
