Interview with Jeff Beck, Behind the Scenes, At home with Jeff Beck and his Guitars, Jeff Beck and Les Paul

Jeff Beck along with other guests have put on a concert to honor the legendary Les Paul. Performed on June 9, 2010 at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City, which would have been the 95th birthday of Les Paul, Rock ‘n’ Roll Party features 27 songs that are being played by such musicians as Brian Setzer, Imelda May, and Darrel Higham as well as others. The songs being played are some of Les Paul’s songs as well as other songs to showcase the talent he had.

What I Thought:

I was impressed with this Blu Ray of the concert. At first glance I didn’t think I would like it. First off the case to the Blu Ray looks more like one used for teaching someone how to play the guitar not for a concert that’s honoring one of the great guitar players.  Then when it started to play the stage that was being used is so small it looks like it’s in some back room of a local comedy club and not at famous spot in NY. However, all my doubts were taken away once the music started to be played and the songs were being sung.

While there are 5 special guest musicians being featured in the concert, the majority of the vocals are being sung by Imelda May. Which I can’t complain about her singing most of the songs because her voice is amazing to listen to and her looks are jazz. She has a wonderful voice and is able to sing some amazing songs that are quite impressive. Though there is one song that was prerecorded so she could do a multi-track style sound where she is also singing along at the same time as the track plays giving it this very different sound.

Along with Imelda May, Darrel Higham is the other performer that does the second most amount of the vocals. He’s also impressive in how well he can sing, but his sound is not as good as Imelda May. Still, he has a really good voice for these style of songs. Though Jeff Beck would be the one to take center stage considering it is his name taking the billboard. Here he plays the different style guitars where he can honor the talent of Les Paul and he does a great job doing it. Jeff Beck is an exceptional guitarist, one who can make the guitar do pretty much whatever he wants.

This is a fun concert to listen to and to watch with such rich sounds and just getting to see how the performers dress is worth watching. Out of this whole concert the only time I was disappointed with it was not getting to hear more of Brian Setzer sing. Though he plays in a second song he only does lead vocals in the one song and it’s near the end of the concert.

 Blu Ray Experience:

This is one of the times that the saying of “Blu Ray Experience” actually lives up to itself. If I had surround sound I would have doubt in thinking that it would have felt like I was at the concert when it was being performed. That’s how well the sound quality is on this Blu Ray. My volume levels on my television had to be brought down to around level 6 because the sound is so crisp. It’s levels are high but not in any distorting way it sounds or making it sound loud. This is one of the times that it’s instantly seen and heard how the quality of a Blu Ray making this a enjoyment to watch.
