Title: Ka-Boom Genre: Comedy, Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi Starring: Haley Bennett, Thomas Dekker, James Duval, Andy Fischer-Price, Brandy Futch Director: Gregg Araki Studio: MPI Home Video Runtime: 86 minutes Release Date: May 31, 2011 Format: DVD MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B+ This ain't your mama's end of the world movie. It's more like if your crazy Uncle Steve -- who did a lot of acid in the 70s and as a result always drinks way too much and dances inappropriately at weddings -- made a movie. Come on, we all have a crazy Uncle Steve. Maybe Gregg Araki is his family's crazy Uncle Gregg. I don't know his life. In any case, he knows how to make a fun movie. Ka-Boom starts off as a youthful foray into the delicious, illicit world of college partying. There are drugs. There are girls. There are boys. There is copious sex of all varieties. Bear in mind this movie is not for prudes. If you're not one to be bothered by such things, there's a lot of enjoyment to be had. Thomas Dekker plays sexually-confused protagonist Smith beautifully. Everyone has had a friend who identifies himself as gay but perpetually finds himself enamored of straight guys, much like Smith, who pines for his meathead Abercrombie model roommate, Thor. Yes, Thor is how he introduces himself. No, it did not bother me as a viewer, because I was surrendering myself to this alternate reality that Araki built in which guys named Thor are no big deal. Eating cookies with questionable ingredients at mysterious parties with mysterious guests is, similarly, no big deal. This is the world in which you enter for 86 minutes. If you don't enjoy that 86 minutes, you're probably too uptight. Haley Bennett also personifies my teenage dream of becoming the MTV cartoon character Daria as Smith's best friend Stella. Her dry, deadpan humor is the stuff of 90s glory days gone by. Juno MacGuff wishes she was as cool as Stella, but Stella just wishes Juno MacGuff would go away and leave her lunch money. I don't want to give too much away, and I feel I already have. There's witchcraft, cults, animal masks, murder, disappearances, unanswered questions, impending doom, and a lot of other delightful things that you really don't want to miss out on. So don't. |
