Having lived in Detroit in late 90s and early 2000s, I have passed the old Tiger Stadium on the way to Mexican town many times. I never had a chance to see any actual game at the stadium. After a few years of neglect, the buildings were abandoned, and some parts were so decayed that it was almost impossible for me to picture the glorious times. My knowledge of MLB and its history is not at all extensive enough to analyze any game or player, so I am not going to even try to do that here. What I can say about this collection is that it definitely showed me the significance and the glory of the Detroit Tigers franchise.
The four games in this collection are apparently selected by tigers.com readers. The first disc, containing Game 5 of the 1968 World Series vs. the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals, has evidently the poorest quality because it is the oldest game in the set. The game is presented in black and white, the picture is quite grainy, and it is often hard to hear what the broadcaster says. Nevertheless, it reminds us that we truly are watching a piece of baseball history, and I can see why this game was chosen by the fans to be included in this set. The fifth inning turned the momentum and propelled the Tigers to a 5-3 win.
The quality of the images and the audio obviously gets better from the second disc on, which shows the 1984 World Series Game 5 against the San Diego Padres. The real gem of the disc for hardcore Tigers fans may be sportscaster Ernie Harwell’s radio play-by-play. The final game played at Tiger Stadium on the third disc could be better if they included the closing ceremony where former Tigers players are introduced while the scoreboard shows their career stats. The last disc features the American League Championship Series game when the Tigers clinched a World Series spot in 2006.
From the four games and many highlights included in the bonus features, the viewers will see the most memorable moments of the Tigers. It is also quite fascinating to see the evolution of baseball such as the size of the players, the uniforms, and the radio and TV broadcastings. This box set makes a great addition to any baseball fan’s library. It is a part of sports history that you can own at an attractive price.
