Filming locations included Los Angeles, California- Monterrey, Mexico- and San Bernardino, California.
It’s 1957 and an underdog team from Monterrey, Mexico has been given the opportunity of a lifetime, to play Little League Baseball, maybe even enter the World Series. Made up of a rag tag group of dreamers and led by a one time MLB hopeful Cesar Faz (Clifton Collins, Jr.), who the kids convince to be their coach, the team goes up against kids more experienced and 40 pounds their weight. The end result is an amazing record breaking event that remains to this day the only one of its kind in the Little League World Championships. Stars Cheech Marin (Hoodwinked Too!), Moises Arias (Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place), Ryan Ochoa (Pair of Kings, iCarly), Jake T. Austin (Wizards of Waverly Place, Go Diego, Go), and Jansen Panettiere (The X’s, Robots).
QUALITY:
Unlike the title this Blu-Ray transfer is only near perfect. The film attempts to re-create what look like archive or dream sequence moments that drain the color form the film and drop it into a whitish gloom that invites a bit of grain in and simply makes the film look odd. Mind you its an expression of the events taking place that that time but it seems really unnecessary. Kids will know back flashes when they see them I think. Some interior shots, like inside of the church, play with black levels giving them a bit of grain but then again the inside of the church has this smoky effect to it that I don’t entirely understand. Other then that most of the film is extremely bright and colorful looking with a good amount of definition from blades of glass to uniforms to facial features. The picture really pops, skin tone is natural, black levels deep. If only it could have been this, obviously it had the ability to be, but you just have to suck it up and accept that the direction of the film was given its artistic look for a reason. Nothing much can be done about that. Audio is odd but I chalk that up to editing. In one scene the boys get an out on a rival team and they start jumping all over one another and it sounds somewhat similar to an empty cardboard box being whacked with a baseball bat. Interesting effects but a little odd. Other then that sound is good, nothing immersive, but suit’s the film well.
