Obscure: The Aftermath takes place two years after the events of the first game. Shannon and Kenny have moved on to their local university while Stan delivers pizzas. On campus, this new trippy drug created from a strange flower is all the rage. The bad thing is that the spores from these flowers are causing people to mutate into horrible monsters.

The game is exactly like playing your favorite B horror film. It’s filled with cheesy clichés and idiotic characters who you want to kill, rather than letting the monsters take care of it for you. The best thing is that the game knows this. It’s trying to mimic those horrible films we see in theaters and does a great job doing so.

Probably the most fun out Obscure II comes from finding all the different references. It’s the little things that make it so hilarious; you’re going to die if you have sex, all the many drug references, even the music is reminiscent of the genre. Check everywhere and watch everything.

Players can take control of one of the many college aged students as they take on these evil creatures in pairs of two. To add a twist, each character has a special ability that will help them survive this nightmare. For instance, Shannon can control the black auras scattered throughout, and Amy can solve jigsaw puzzles. You have be careful of which two you decide to take with you at certain points or else you end up having to go back and switch them out.

Since you can only control one character at a time, your partner is AI controlled and we all know how frustrating that can be. More times than not, you partner will get in the way of what you’re trying to do or where you’re trying to go. They will also stupidly rush into battle as if they have a death wish.

Thankfully, the PSP version has online so you can connect with a friend and play the game co-op. It’s a whole new experience this way. The difficult part is actually finding someone to play with though. Searching for a game to join can take upwards of 30 minutes sometimes.

Obscure: The Aftermath is bad, but in a good way. Its cheesy story will have you laughing most of the time and the gameplay is decent, although a bit slow. Graphically, it’s a fun portable game to simply pick up and play for a long road trip or outing. After being released on the PS2, Wii, and PC, it seems like the game has finally found a proper home on the PSP.
