BOTTOM LINE

Inception is not only one of the best films of the summer, it's one of the best films of 2010.

When Inception's trailer first hit the theaters, people had no idea what it was about. It had something to do with your mind and dreams and that was about it. Regardless, it was Christopher Nolan's next project and after the success of The Dark Knight, people were starting to get excited. How right they were...

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an Extractor, someone who goes into your dreams to extract the information hidden deep within. People feel secure within their dreams so their guard is down. That's when Dom strikes. It's not a one man job though. He is accompanied by his Point Man, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who researches the target to make the dreams feel as real as possible and his Architect, Ariadne (Ellen Page), who is the one responsible for creating the environments within the dream.

Extraction is Dom's specialty but rumors are that Inception, the ability to plant an idea into ones mind, is possible although it's never been done. Dom's final job is to plant an idea into the target's mind and then get out. To do so requires going deeper than ever before. One small mistake and the entire operation is finished.

In Inception, the dream world and reality are practically one. While "dying" in the dream world only wakes you up in the real one, the pain and injuries are all real. Environments can be manipulated to one's advantage but do too much manipulation and the sub-conscience begins to catch on and attack. Sound confusing? This is only the surface.

Planting an idea, one that the target believes they thought up themselves, requires to go three levels deep. That means a dream within a dream within a dream. At times you'll wonder what in the world is going on but never do you feel lost with the film. It's both confusing and awesome at the same time. Christopher Nolan is an excellent storyteller and Inception is quite the masterpiece.

Leonardo DiCaprio puts on a good show as the morally confused Dom who is torn between the dream world and reality. Just like the dreams he invades, there is so much going on below the surface of his character. The big star of the show is not DiCaprio however; it's Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He has come so far in acting since his 3rd Rock from the Sun days and it shows. It's no wonder he might be in the running for the Riddler in Nolan's next Batman. Everyone puts on a great performance in the film, even Ellen Page.

The visuals are absolutely stunning. You've seen buildings being manipulated but that's nothing until you see it on the big screen. There's one scene in particular involving Arthur fighting in zero gravity that is just amazing. You'll also see some of Nolan's trademark city shots that look fantastic as well. Accompany that with a fantastic score by Hans Zimmer and you have an experience like no other. I can only imagine seeing it in IMAX.

Believe all the hype and excitement because as dream-like as it might seem, Inception is the real deal. As confusing and ridiculous as some of it is, the film fits together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle. Only then do you get to see the entire picture and think, "Wow, that's amazing!" You'll definitely want to see the film twice or even a third time. There's simply too much going on to take in all at once. Inception is not only one of the best films of the summer, it's one of the best films of 2010.
