Title: Resident Evil: Afterlife Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Spencer Locke Director: Paul W. S. Anderson Studio: Screen Gems Runtime: 97 minutes In Theatres: September 10, 2010 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: D+ BOTTOM LINE As a film in general, Resident Evil: Afterlife is an average action flick with some zombies thrown into the mix. As a Resident Evil film, which is what the majority of people will expect, it fails to capture what makes the games so great. Resident Evil: Extinction left us with Alice and an army of clones declaring war on the Umbrella Corporation, setting us up for the next film in the series. Well, it's been three years and that sequel is finally upon us. Afterlife continues Alice's search for any remaining survivors as she comes face to face with the man behind it all, Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts). The opening scene gives you a good inclination as to how the rest of the film will play out. Alice and her posse of clones invade Umbrella's Tokyo headquarters. It's a scene comprising of 50% CGI, 25% slow motion, and 100% cheese factor. Bullets are flying, blood is gushing, and it's as over the top as you can imagine. Oh and what about the zombies? There practically nowhere in sight. It seems the film has forgotten the whole survival horror genre that the game is famous for and instead gone for a straight up action flick. Occasionally we'll get to see Alice take down a massive horde of undead and walk away without a scratch. Still, it's just a bunch of action sequences and doesn't fit the Resident Evil franchise all that well, even though there are plenty of things in common. Fans of the video game will be familiar with many of the characters and elements in the film. Wesker and Claire (Ali Larter) have much bigger roles than they had in previous films and even Jill makes a brief appearance. Favorite Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) makes his on screen debut and boy does he make quite the impression. It appears that Paul W.S. Anderson looked to Resident Evil 5 for most of his material as you'll find numerous similarities between the game and the film such as the Executioner Majini. There's even an awesome fight sequence taken directly from the game involving Wesker. Let's just say that Chris gets his butt handed to him...again. Unfortunately, the similarities end there, and they are surrounded by some ridiculous excuse for a story that revolves around looking good for 3D. It's sad because Resident Evil: Afterlife uses the same Fusion Camera System designed by James Cameron that Avatar used. It seems all Anderson wanted to do with it though is perform as many slow motion shots as possible with things coming towards the screen, whether it be guns, bullets, blood, or whatever else they could find. Rather than immerse you into the film, the 3D feels gimmicky and tacked on, despite being filmed that way from the start. As a film in general, Resident Evil: Afterlife is an average action flick with some zombies thrown into the mix. As a Resident Evil film, which is what the majority of people will expect, it fails to capture what makes the games so great. It's slowly been a downward slope for the RE film franchise so perhaps it's time to throw in the towel. |

I personally enjoyed the
I personally enjoyed the film. It brought into the mix some major characters from the games that you usually don't see like this. It was a little disappointing and I agree that the 3D could have been left out and a much better film would have been the end result. Overall, it was enjoyable as mentioned; however, for the 32 bucks I paid for two people to see the 3D film... it left me wanting something more.
