This DVD and Blu-Ray were released only six days after the movie’s TV premiere (November 25, 2009)
Ben and the secret organization “The Plumbers” face a black market selling stolen alien nanotechnology. Ben also meets his old friend Elena, and she informs him that her father, who is a former Plumber, is missing. Despite the objections of Gwen, Kevin, and Grandpa Max, Ben decides to help her.
This is their second live-action film based on Cartoon Network’s original animated series “Ben 10”. When the show started, protagonist Ben Tennyson was only 10 years old. While Ben still uses Omnitrix to transform into different alien forms in order to battle evil alien forces, the biggest and most obvious difference from their first made-for-TV movie is that in Alien Swarm, Ben is a teenager. Therefore, he is more emotional and complex than before, and the storyline includes a little more serious and personal matters, such as Ben defying his grandfather.
The movie has typical elements to attract tween boys – fighting and kicking aliens’ butts (nothing brutal or gruesome), conspiracy theories, cool cars/motorcycles, and a little bit of romance. Kids who are familiar with the animated series will certainly be thrilled with the more “realistic” visual effects. Although this live-action adaptation of Ben 10 is probably not a movie that kids will be raving about to their friends and family on and on, Sci-Fi fantasy and family friendly action adventure are blended together to create good entertainment.
