Show: Black Butler Season/Volume: Season One, Part 1 Genre: Anime Starring: J. Michael Tatum, Brina Palencia, Monica Rial Studio: Funimation Runtime: 300 minutes Release Date: January 11, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: B Sebastian is one hell of a butler, literally. You see, he's a demon who has made a pact with the young Ceil, the head of the Phantomhive estate. As a result he is bound to do whatever his master commands. Black Butler is part Gothic horror, part comedy, but it will always manage to put a smile on your face. While much of the anime takes place in the mansion, dealing with stereotypical butler duties, Ceil does venture out to perform his duties to the Queen in investigating strange occurrences. These events should be familiar to all as they include searching for Jack the Ripper and a case that is eerily similar to The Hound of the Baskervilles. It's a whole new take on Victorian era London. One thing that is confusing at first is Ceil. It took me five minutes of watching before I realized that he was actually a boy. Besides his small and feminine look, he is also voiced by a woman. I think the creators are aware of this fact and use it in their humor. Some episodes Ceil is referred to a girl and in one, he wears a dress to infiltrate a party. Sebastian, even though he is a demon, always retains a shred of humanity. His calmness when it comes to any intense situation can be creepy at times and yet he remains dedicated to his master. Whether he's fighting the Grimm Reaper or preparing the mansion for the next big party, Sebastian is always on top of things. Black Butler is a dark and humorous anime that manages to successfully portray both themes. Season One, Part 1 has intrigued me enough to make me want to check out the rest of the series. I'm sure it will do the same for you. |
