Show: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Action/Adventure, Anime Starring: Christopher R. Sabat, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Sonny Strait, Sean Schemmel, Monica Rial Studio: Funimation Runtime: 325 minutes Release Date: September 14, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: B- There has been so many different releases of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series that it's becoming s sure bet that within the next few years, there will be a whole new set calling itself the "definitive edition." Dragon Ball Z Kai is the latest release that cuts out much of the boring conversations and goes straight into the action. This means that the scripts have been rewritten, the animations have been retouched, and the voice overs have been rerecorded with most of the original cast.. Season One, Part Two continues with the conclusion of Goku and Vegeta's battle on Earth and ends with the death of Zarbon on Planet Namek. It's been years since I've last seen the beginning story arcs of Dragon Ball Z so there was nothing noticeable that was missing from Kai. The show flowed smoothly and there was little not no drawn out arcs that featured no action. It seems like everything shown was vital to progressing the storyline. I did notice a few changes with the voice cast (Young Gohan and Frieza come to mind) but for the most part, the show is exactly how I remember it all those years ago. Episodes looks pretty good; definitely better than any previous releases. They're still not quite as spectacular looking as I'd like them to be. If only they looked like the short cutscenes or intro and ending credits then I would be overly impressed. Speaking of the credits, the new songs are absolutely horrible. They sound so cheesy and are poorly put together. Oh well, at least they're skippable. I really enjoyed watching Kai but this is only the second part to be released and the next one isn't due out for another few months. It's such a shame that the releases are so spread out. Plus, you know there's going to be some enormous box set released once the entire series gets the Kai treatment. Fans of the series probably already have enough sets for Dragon Ball Z and another one claiming to be the best is just going to piss them off probably. For the handful of people who have yet to see the anime (gasp!) or if you haven't given in to purchasing any of the releases before, Kai is a great place to start. |
