Show: My Bride is a Mermaid Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Anime Starring: Todd Haberkorn, Christopher R. Sabat, Juli Erickson Studio: Funimation Runtime: 300 minutes Release Date: July 20, 2010 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: D- The title of the anime says it all basically. Nagasumi is a young teenage boy who is spending his summer vacation at the beach when one day he is suddenly saved from drowning by a mermaid named Sun. As mermaid law, either Sun or Nagasumi must die because a mermaid must never been seen in true form by a human. In an effort to spare both their lives, the two get married. Sound weird? That's because it is. Mermaids, teen marriages, it's all just another day in the anime world. My Bride is a Mermaid is simply another one of those childhood fantasies of finding some hot bride and spending the rest of your days living happily with each other. Alright, so you have her crazy Yakuza father chasing after your every move. Maybe it's not all grounded in the fantasy world. The show itself is just like the age of the characters in it; childish. Nagasumi is annoying. Sun is annoying, and becomes even more so when she goes into her honor among the sea speech in practically every episode. Practically everyone in the anime is annoying. After watching an episode or two, I thought it wasn't so bad. Once you get deep within the story though, that's where it begin to get unbearable. My Bride is a Mermaid definitely isn't the weirdest of the animes I've seen before but there's nothing that makes me want to watch any more of it. There seems to be an adverse affect in that the more you watch it, the less inclined you are to like it. Maybe it's a good thing that this is only Part One of the first season. Who knows what I would have done if I watched the entire season. |
