"The Diets that Time Forgot" is a six-episode look into what dieting was like more than 100 years ago when women's waists were 10 inches smaller and men were 20 lbs lighter. The British show follows nine people on a life-changing journey over a five week period (give or take).

The nine participants are broken into three groups: The Victorians, The Edwardians, and the 1920s. They all lived, dressed, dieted, and exercised according to their respective periods.

  • The Victorians eat a very Atkins-like diet of high protein and almost no fiber or sugar.
  • The Edwardians can eat whatever they want, but they must chew each bite 32 times before allowing the food to slide down the throat and then spit out whatever doesn't go down the throat. This is referred to as the "chew-chew diet."
  • The 1920s group followed the first calorie controlled diet eating only 1200 calories a day. They ate A LOT of celery.

They are all weighed every four days for progress and are measured on their metabolical age based on weight, age, and current lifestyle. Many of the participants clocked in at a good 20 years or more than their current age. That was a wake up call for most. I said most. There are some stubborn participants with some stubborn habits and one even left after only two weigh ins.

The entire experiment is centered around self-control and relearning (or learning for the first time) where good food (not processed) comes from and what our current culture of fast food has done to our bodies. It is a great learning experience. Warning, there is some nudity (the Brits have different TV rules than we do) and the "poo" episode is not one to watch while eating, but there are some belly laughs to be had with that one.

All in all, this is a fun and educational DVD set to watch. I've even started the "chew-chew" technique myself. It's amazing how slowing down and taking the time to chew your food gives your body time to tell your brain that you're full. No more snarfing!
