Show: Wish Me Luck Season/Volume: 2 Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama Starring: Jane Asher, Kate Buffery, Mark Anstee, John Boswall, Tom Chadbon Studio: Acorn Media Runtime: 375 minutes Release Date: January 25, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: A "Wish Me Luck" is a BBC World War II (WWII) drama from the 1980s. The title is taken from a WWII song of the same name, and the show's plot revolves around "espionage, danger, and romance behind enemy lines" with British women spies of all ages and one very young Jeremy Northam as "Colin." Instead of occupied Britain, we now turn to occupied France and the operatives of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) whose mission statement "was to link up with resistance movements - primarily the French Resistance - to undermine the Germans in the countries they had occupied." The SOE was appointed by none other than Winston Churchill himself. Series 2 focuses on three female agents, Liz from series 1 (Buffery), and new recruits Vivien (Farleigh) and Emily (Snowden) as they set out to undermine those Germans. But things don't go as swimmingly as you would imagine; they never do, do they? As in real life, these characters have their own demons and personal baggage they should have checked at the door which makes for a lot of character development, but not action. I can't quite tell if the hairstyles are authentic or if they're 1980s attempts at 1940s ones. Hmmm.... The costumes and sets though are authentic-looking enough for me, however. The filming of the show switches back and forth between film and tape quite a bit. I am used to that having watched several BBC shows of the time, but it may be jarring for the new viewer. Acorn Media always releases a good product and you won't be sorry here. The BBC is one for drama and more than your fair share of tension which you will find with these agents, experienced and novice alike. All seven episodes of "Wish Me Luck, Series 2" will be available January 25.
