Show: The Gates Episode(s): The Monster Within Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Starring: Rhona Mitra, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Luke Mably Network: ABC Airdate/Time: July 18, 2010 10:00pm Rating: ( )Grade: C+ The Gates is ABC's newest drama that is said to be Desperate Housewives meets True Blood. It follows Nick Monohan as he adjusts to his new life as the chief police officer of the secluded community. All is not what it seems of course as many of its residents are vampires, werewolves, witches, and succubi. Talk about a diverse group of people. "The Monster Within" is only the fourth episode so we're still getting introduced to some of the characters. Even so, I was expecting there to be more supernatural elements in the show. It's actually not that much different from the rest of the sexy dramas out there. This episode revolves around a murder in the forest on the outskirts of the community. Turns out the werewolves did it although you rarely ever see them except for a few scenes. For the most part, everyone stays in their human form. It's kinda disappointing. Of course, there's tons of drama in these small neighborhoods and The Gates is no exception. There are cover-ups, secret meetings, and other shenanigans that the residents get into and hide from their significant others. That part of the show is pretty interesting but as I stated before, it's nothing new. The Gates is still in it's infancy so there's time for it to improve. I don't think it will have the strength or appeal of either Desperate Housewives or True Blood but it could do alright. It just needs some more of the vampires and werewolves. And no, not in a Twilight sort of way. We'll see how things turn up in the coming weeks. |
