Artist: Justine Bennett Album: Heavy Feeling Members: Justine Bennett Genre: Folk Label: Authentik Artists Inc. Tracks: 5 Type: EP Release Date: May 4, 2010 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: C A forrest of trees among a field of grass, all supported by the bluest of skies. This is the scenery Justine Bennett is trying to deliver with her newest Ep, "Heavy Feeling". Not only is she trying to deliver it through music, she put the imagery on the album cover! Justine Bennett, originally from British Columbia, has settled into San Francisco, California and has shown no intent on leaving. Her sound is remarkably similar to the music of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks and almost any 70's artist with an acoustic guitar. While that might sound negative...well, it kind of is. The music in "Heavy Feeling' isn't bad, it just sounds a lot like all of the other material just mentioned. Closing my eyes, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the title track "Heavy Feeling" and Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi". That said, "Heavy Feeling" isn't a bad EP. It's just a repetitive one. Whether it's the tale of her power of overcoming trouble in "Broken" or the cross-country road trip anthem "Coming Home", Bennett has the power of imagery and it's noticeable. Through her voice and story-telling lyrics, Justine knows how to work the art of a folk album. Her only issue is the unoriginal sound of folk music. Any Stevie Nicks fans out there? If so, Justine Bennett knows exactly what you need and delivers it ruthlessly with her new EP, "Heavy Feeling". |
