>> Death Note remake w/ Joseph Gordon Levitt in 2010?

Is Death Note finally being made into a U.S. cast movie?  Whether this is good news or not for fans is yet to be seen but, after some digging, it appears that the movie is on the fast track to start filming, possibly as soon as this Fall for a Fall 2010 release.

After a multi-studio battle, the film rights were finally secured by Vertigo Entertainment, a studio that has been responsible for a slew of Asian remakes coming to the states including Infernal Affairs (aka The Departed), Shutter, and Ju-On (aka The Grudge).  As with their previous remakes, Vertigo is having a script treatment written and then will approach larger studios with pre-production set.  Vertigo has hired Vlas and Charles Parlapanides to draft the script with co-creator Takeshi Obata overlooking the re-write.

None of this is necessarily NEW news as most of this was reported last year.  Sources at Vertigo, however, are confirming that the final draft of the script has been greenlit and casting is about to begin.  No word yet on casting choices or whether or not the "Shinigami" characters will be CGI or not, but the studio is apparently reaching out to Joseph Gordon Levitt for a role, though that role is unknown.

After battling for the DRAGONBALL franchise and losing, sources at Vertigo are vowing to stay more true to the source material than what Dragonball appears to be.  Death Note was the top selling anime and manga of 2007, unseeding Dragonball's 13 year reign.

The original's story follows the mysterious "L" and others as they try to catch cool and brainy high school student Raito Yagami ("Light" in America), who has come into possession of a notebook that allows him to summon a murderous demon simply by writing the name of his intended victim. Although Raito is aware that killing is wrong, he strongly believes that the violent crimes he perpetrates are justified because "evildoers must die in order to create a better society."

The anime/manga has already been adapted into 3 live action movies in Japan which have already been released or scheduled for theatrical release in the U.S.

Hmmmmm

I don't know why they are remaking it. It has already been released in the U.S. in theaters. However it does give me a little hope that it might be decent (though not as good as the originals) since it is by the same studio that did The Departed. But then again they did Shutter. I don't want to see it get remade, but I will hold off on saying if I will see it or not until I hear the casting.

Remake

If its got Joseph Godon Levitt in it as L or as Light it will be awesome. The guy has such a way of perfecting damaged characters. His characters in Brick and Mysterious Skin are a prime example.

Yepyep

I saw him in Manic and he was really good. I could see him be pretty good in this movie. I'm just really worried about the other people that they might cast. And I swear if somehow Miley ends up being Misa Misa I'm going to cry.

Misa

I will cry too T-T cause misa is my cosplay character. Its says that Takeshi Obata is overseeing the rewrite which puts my brain at ease cause Obata isn't going to let them screw it up like they screwed up Dragonball Evolution ^.^ Maybe we can rest easier knowing this

...

"sources at Vertigo are vowing to stay more true to the source material"

i highly doubt it.

Death Note Movie

Do you guys remember Dragon Ball Evolution? Remeber how that turned out?

Death Note

I really hope this isn't like Dragonball Evolution, that movie was just awful, and this is coming from a HUGE DBZ fan. If they cast any DISNEY stars, you can expect ratings to go down.

Noooooo!!!!!!

This will suck. Do u really think it will be a good movie?

Can we send suggestions to WB?

I was hoping to send a letter to WB as a fan of dos and don't if they are serious about making this movie.

Joseph Gordon Levitt? L?

The first thing an otaku wants from a manga-to-movie is the resemblance to the real characters. You can not use actors, no matter how good they are, that don't resemble the characters of the manga! Logan Lerman who plays Raito is still acceptable but Joseph Gordon Levitt playing L is a terrible idea, who will interpret Watari, Morgan Freeman?

Hate this.

Sucks, America has got to ruin every good thing. If the make a suckish remake off one of my favorite anime's then they die.....I doubt this is even real, wouldn't there be trailers if this was to be released this fall? Nothing, exactly. So yeah.

Hope they don't screw up. (:

I think its a great idea, as long as they stick to the ORIGINAL story line and characters! I really hope they get a really good L look alike and he can actually act like him.. then I'd be happy ^__^
I think the movie would be a great success too, everybody in my family LOVES detective and crime films... all in all they can't go wrong if Virtigo Entertainment sticks to the plot, cant wait too see it! :)

Kill it with fire.

Kill it with fire.

i dont know

i just really hope that the cast is good and if they take it seriously and play the characters right then i think i'll enjoy it. but i'll be pissed if they cast one of the jonas brothers for L..if miley cyrus is misa she will die....im not sure abou zac efron though...this is coming from someone who hates him. if he actually acts like light then i'll be ok but if the laugh is wrong he must die

OMFG

NO NO FUCKING NO
Why does stupid hollywood have to steal and make shitty remakes of awesome series? Just fucking leave it alone!
