Susan Clynes is a Belgian singer/ pianist who is now based in New York. Her latest album, “Life is,” was compiled from three live concerts at two different locations. She describes her musical style as mix between Art-pop, avant-pop, progressive pop, jazz and classical. Some musical artist she likes are Sophie Hunger, Keren Ann, Essra Mohawk, Brad Mehldau, and Blonde Redhead. She is a talented artist with a unique sound.

After listening to “Life is,” I noticed a real Broadway musical vibe to Susan and the album. She has an amazingly strong voice and very emotional lyrics. However, the instrumentals, especially the intros, were the most powerful aspect of this album. Both the instrumentals and the vocals worked really well together to provide a well-rounded album for the album listeners. My only issue is this might not appeal to those in the mainstream or on the pop charts.

If you love musicals and hearing impressive piano playing, “Life is” is the perfect album for you. Even though most might not see the appeal of this album, I think it is still worth a listen. Susan is more like a less R&B version of Alicia Keys, but a more tame Idina Menzel. I liked most of the album and I am sure my husband loved the piano portions of the songs. For those reasons, I am giving this album a “B.”
