Reunited At Last

Adam Sandler has worked with all four of the other leads before but this is the first time they have all appeared together in one film.

Comedians Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all team up to bring the laughs to the big screen in Grown Ups.

30 years ago, they were all best friends and teammates on their school basketball team. Now they have drifted apart, living their own different lives, but when their old coach dies, they are reunited once again at his funeral. Even though they've grown up and made families of their own (some of them at least), they're still up to the old shenanigans that made them friends in the first place.

You would think that having an all-star comedy cast of Sandler, James, Rock, Spade and Schneider would be amazing, right? Well, the answer is yes and no. The film opens with them all as kids, eventually showing their adult counterparts. Once all five of them get together for the funeral, that's where the jokes start coming. The bad thing is that they just don't stop. It's one joke after another in rapid succession. It seems like everyone one of them must get in a word before a scene ends and by that time, the joke has been long dead.

Grown Ups comes off as more of a roasting than an actual film. Someone with say something or take a jab at one of their costars and then there is a flurry of rebuttals and comebacks. In the end, no one comes out a winner. Usually it's the wives who are the voice of reason in the film, although they do get a little crazy every now and then as well.

There are plenty of good jokes in the film and each actor is able to get his or her time in the spotlight as well. What's bad is the fact that you have to weed through so much filler before you get to the good stuff.

Grown Ups is a rental at best. There is truth in the saying that you can have too much of a good thing. Sure, it was great seeing the Comedic 5 all in one place but if they would have simply toned it down a bit, the film could have been much better.
