Title: MacGruber Genre: Comedy Starring: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer, Maya Rudolph Director: Jorma Taccone Studio: Rogue Runtime: 99 minutes In Theatres: May 21, 2010 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C- BOTTOM LINE You'll definitely get a few laughs out of the film but just be prepared to sacrifice a few brain cells in the process. MacGruber made his Saturday Night Live debut in 2007 and is a parody on the popular MacGyver television series. In each mini-episode, MaGruber finds himself trapped in a control room with a ticking bomb ready to explode. Due to his incompetence and inability to focus, the bomb usually goes off, ending the skit. Does MacGruber have what it takes to make it on the big screen though? Up until now, we've only had MacGruber (Will Forte) in small doses no longer than a few minutes. Over the past few years, we've gotten to know the character in this time frame but there was still much to learn about him and his female assistant Vicky (Kristen Wiig). The film plans to explore all of that and much more. Perhaps too much to be honest. The film has MacGruber on a mission to save the United States from a nuclear holocaust set in motion by the evil Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). Cunth is usually pronounced with a silent 'h' so it lends itself to plenty of stereotypical potty humor. While MacGruber fiddles around with rubber bands and thumbtacks, the real agent helping out is Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe). This Channing Tatum look-alike is about as close to an intelligent being you're going to get in the film. Seriously, it's that ridiculous. For the character he's based on, MacGruber is about as stupid as they come. He doesn't even make that many improvised weapons or tools. Most of the time he's just smack talking or getting himself and his team deeper in trouble. Yes, there are occasional moments, such as the sex scene, that are particularly hilarious, but for the most part, it's filled with empty laughs. He constantly takes jokes too far and just goes with them until there's nothing left. MacGruber follows in the line of SNL films that aren't horrible but then aren't that good either. We are treated with a scene towards the climatic finish that features much of the same lines and actions, making it seem like it was directly pulled from the skit. I think MacGruber's best when viewed in minute long intervals. Give him anything over that and you begin to hate his guts. You'll definitely get a few laughs out of the film but just be prepared to sacrifice a few brain cells in the process.

I don't know..
I loved MacGruber. The humor he was aiming for is dead on. The direction was picture perfect too with Lonely Island member and SNL writer Jorma Taccone. You also failed to mention how it was a spoof on 80's action movies and how serious they tend to be. Not to mention the soundtrack.
Soundtrack?
First if anyone does not know or can't put together that this is a spoof of not just 80's movies but mainly Macgyver the TV series the perhaps they shouldn't be watching it. And next the soundtrack? Really? That needs to be mentioned in a review for the MOVIE? I am sorry but there is no way I would pay to go see a movie based on the soundtrack alone, I would buy the album instead.
Mac Gruber
all I can say is this is a stupid movie, lousy comedy. Joe
